Breaking makes its debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics, but the hip-hop inspired dance had started taking form in 1970s New York at lively block parties.

In 1982, Michael Holman recruited the best dancers across the city and formed the 'New York City Breakers. In 1984, they performed a salute to the US Olympic team and proclaimed it should be a future event at the games.
