Author Laura Dockrill: First loves ‘are the things that shape us’

Can you ever really be just best friends with the love of your life?

Author Laura Dockrill met her first love, Hugo White (formerly of the indie rock band The Maccabees) and became close friends aged 14. But when she confessed her love to him aged 19, he didn’t respond.

Years later, in their 30s, Laura and Hugo reconnected and are now married with a young child.

Her stories about the thrills and heartbreak of first love have inspired Laura’s first adult novel, I Love You, I Love You, I Love You.

She joined Nuala McGovern on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour to discuss the real-life experiences behind the book and why she feels so strongly that these early loves help shape us and make us who we are.

You can listen to the full interview with Laura on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Sounds – it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 19 June.
