Raye: ‘It shouldn't be something that we're silent about’

Singer-songwriter Raye on why she’s speaking out about sexual assault.

Singer-songwriter Raye told Emma Barnett why she wants to use her platform to speak out about sexual assault and mistreatment of women in the music industry.

Speaking on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, she said that when she was young she felt ‘too small to be heard’ and worried that speaking up would jeopardise her career.

But now she’s got her voice back. The lyrics to her song ‘Ice Cream Man’ outline her experience of sexual assault by an unnamed record producer.

Raye told Emma that while it’s still tough to sing and talk about it, she wants to speak about these difficult experiences to be loud about them. She says that it isn’t something we should be silent about, even if it feels ‘awkward and uncomfortable to talk about’.

Raye won a record-breaking six awards at this year’s Brits, including Songwriter of the Year and Album of the Year.
