Not standing in the forum
Caesar has made himself Dictator for ten Years – it is entirely unprecedented in the history of the Republic. He has filled the Senate with supporters. Those who want a seat at his table conjure honours to present to him, in order to ingratiate themselves. When a group of Senators approach Caesar the Forum to offer him yet more honours, he doesn’t behave in the manner expected of him. Senators should stand to greet each other, as a show of mutual respect – but Caesar remains seated. It is symbolic of his increasing disregard for the conventions of the 500 year old Roman Republic.
