The problem of waste is a truly global one – and one that needs global solutions. The nominees in the Build a Waste-Free World category are all working to reduce our impact in very different ways. Circ are a textile recycling company based in America, who have found an effective way to recycle polycotton – breaking it down into its constituent parts of cotton and polyester and enabling old clothes to be more effectively turned into new garments. In India, S4S fight to tackle food waste, working with small-scale farmers they use solar dryers to take produce that may otherwise rot or spoil and turn them into products that can be stored and sold on. And in the UK, Colorifix have developed a new, biological process to fix dye to fabrics – both reducing the use of chemicals and greatly decreasing the waste water needed at the same time.
