Dr Nadia Nadim: ‘We’re put in these boxes. Refuse’

Dr Nadia Nadim, Afghanistan’s most successful and most influential female footballer, first kicked a football at the age of 11 in a Danish refugee camp - her family had been forced to flee Afghanistan following the death of her father at the hands of the Taliban.

She’s gone on to represent Denmark - missing out on this year’s World Cup due to injury. She is also a medical doctor, qualifying last year.

Now in the US, playing for Racing Louisville FC, Nadia spoke to Hayley Hassall about women not taking ‘no’ for an answer and how her childhood gave her extra drive and ambition.

She also shared her reflections as we mark the second anniversary of the Taliban’s latest takeover of Afghanistan next week.

You can listen to Nadia’s full interview by heading to Â鶹ԼÅÄ Sounds - it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 11 August.
