BookTok: Why people are turning to 'emotionally hyperbolic' TikTok videos for must reads

How do you get your book recommendations? Would you turn to TikTok?

A whole new community has formed on the platform, which sees creators, or BookTokkers, recording videos giving their top picks, reviewing the latest releases and bringing characters and story plots to life.

And TikTok has now decided to get in on the action with their very own book awards, which includes categories such as ‘Best Book to End a Reading Slump’ and ‘Best Book I Wish I Could Read Again for the First Time’.

To discuss this way of getting book recommendations, Nuala McGovern was joined on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 4's Woman's Hour by BookTokker Holly McLoughlin, otherwise known as ‘the caffeinated reader’ on TikTok, and Susie Goldsborough, Assistant Literary Editor for The Times.

You can listen to the discussion in full on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Sounds - it's the Woman's Hour episode from 1 August.
