'He would say he could do with me as he pleased since he bought me like a goat in the market'
Wahaya is a prevalent form of slavery in southern Niger where wealthy men buy young women for as little as $200 and make them fifth wives to circumvent Islamic law, which only allows a man to have a maximum of four wives. Hadizatou Mani was sold off to a wealthy tribal chief to become a wahaya at the age of 12. She narrates her story.
