The Art of Southern African Sound

Composer Nyo Vilakazi and his Scottish/African choir present Shona the Musical, a cross-cultural love story that brings alive the vibrancy, splendour and harmonies of Africa, with a western twist.

Shona the Musical is an Edinburgh Fringe hit created by Zimbabwean composer Nyo Vilakazi. The show draws on historical events and the socio-political turmoil of Robert Mugabe’s rule of Zimbabwe, but at its heart it is a cross-cultural love story that transcends racial barriers. With a mix of melodic songs, energetic African drumming, joyful dancing, spectacular costumes and harmonious singing, Nyo unpacks the elements that make Shona a very Southern African blend.
