Incarcerated women across Africa have to cope with poor hygiene in prisons, overcrowding, lack of gender-sensitive rehabilitation services, awareness of sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence. Human rights organizations have been fighting for women-specific approach in prisons by governments, putting the health and well-being of women prisoners high on the agenda.
