There are 600,000 people in the UK with epilepsy. One third of them – 200,000 – will not have their seizures controlled with current treatment options such as epilepsy drugs and brain surgery.
Although the number of men and women with the condition is roughly equal, the impact of the condition on women tends to be much greater.
There are issues around medication and pregnancy and many women experience increased seizure frequency around their menstrual cycle.
Jane Garvey talks to Fran Thomas about her seizures and how she deals with them. Her condition is linked to her cycle and she can have up to 15 fits a day.
