Scotland’s Wildlife Series 1, Scottish Wildcats Wildcat detective work

On the trail of one of the world's rarest species. Scottish Wildcats are elusive animals, stealthy and well camouflaged in their environment. If you want to see one, dawn and dusk are said to be the best times, as this is when they tend to go hunting. In appearance, they're easily confused with the feral cats and runaway pet cats that may also live in the countryside, but look closely, because their markings are unique. The giveaway clue is the wildcat's tail, with its clear, separate, black rings, and blunt (not tapered) black tip, "It's like it's been dipped in black paint", as Jamie Ormiston from Edinburgh Zoo puts it.
