The bestselling author dicusses the painting by Carel Fabritius that is integral to her 2013 novel of the same name. The book's teenage narrator, Theodore Decker, survives a bombing at an art gallery in which his mother dies. Staggering out through the debris, he takes with him the world-famous painting.
