Maverick (aka Tom Cruise) earned his wings as Tony Scott's film Top Gun launched on 3 October 1986. The year's biggest-earning film boosted sales of aviator-style sunglasses and also increased recruitment to the US Navy. Brash, noisy, and stylish, the film divided opinion among film reviewers: while many praised its action sequences, some criticised its overtly masculine and macho tone.
