Maroon Rebels
The people who negotiated their freedom from the British against incredible odds
The first Maroons were groups of African fighters who defied colonial slavery across the new-world colonies of the Americas, and negotiated their freedom from the British against incredible odds. A quarter of a century on, a debate continues about their place in history – were the Maroons freedom fighters or were they collaborators? This programme discusses the dispersion of the Maroon people, their societies and their disputed place in history.
