Flooding, Honours & A Walk In The Sahara

Start New Year's Eve with the latest news and updates, and a morning music mix with Jim.

Two severe flood warnings remain in force in Scotland after heavy rain from Storm Frank yesterday. Hundreds of people have been evacuated and thousands of homes left without power in Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England. Well people from Leicestershire moved by the plight of flood victimshave come together to send donations. People in villages across Leicestershire have grouped together to open up church halls for collections, advertise for donations, find shipping pallets and even a forty four tonne articulated lorry has been commissioned to leave the county heading for Cumbria on Sunday. All this in a few days.
Also, she may have been a pantomime regular over the years but Barbara Windsor has now been made a real life Dame in the New Year's Honours List. The "Carry On" and "Eastenders" actress is one of numerous celebrities honoured for an award. Babs is one of a host of stars from stage and screen to be recognised in the list, including fellow east Londoner turned Hollywood star Idris Elba, who said being made an OBE made him "beyond proud". Celebrated thespian Sian Phillips is also made a Dame. Here in Leicestershire, Victoria Parkinson, an AGI advisor has been awarded honours by two governments for her role in ending the Ebola outbreak which killed 3,955 people in Sierra Leone.
And, what plans do you have for the New Year? Perhaps a holiday booked already? Maybe a big birthday to celebrate in the family? I doubt though you're planning on trekking 100 kilometres across the Sahara Desert? That's precisely what two brothers from Leicester are planning to do to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
