Terry Harrison’s Story
Most wives were eagerly anticipating the return of their husbands from the war on VE Day. Terry Harrison’s mother wasn’t.
While her husband was away fighting, she was left at home to look after their five children. But in 1944, she gave birth to twins after an affair with a black American GI.
Terry remembers that people living in the village of Gaddesby were very cruel to his mother, and her husband got quite a shock when he returned home. But Terry’s mother refused to give up the twins for adoption, and she and her husband stayed together.
Terry remembers yearning for his real father but didn’t find who he was or where he was buried until he was 65.
