Irvine Welsh on his new novel, Scottish nationalism and more

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Arts meets Irvine Welsh in Edinburgh ahead of the publication of his latest book, A Decent Ride. It follows the travails of sex-addict cabbie Juice Terry as he negotiates Hurricane Bawbag, unhinged American TV personalities and crippling personal trauma.

Juice Terry is a recurring character of Welsh’s, having first shown his curly locks in the novel Glue, and shares the same fictional universe as the characters from Welsh’s breakout hit and pop culture juggernaut Trainspotting.

We catch up with Welsh in one of his favourite haunts, Leith Dockers Club, and talk about being bi-continental – dividing his time as he does between Chicago, Miami and Edinburgh – and also his views on the changing face of Scottish nationalism, his hopes for the future of the UK and trying not to outstay his welcome when he comes home to see his pals.

A Decent Ride is published by Jonathan Cape.
