The Young Tamlane, traditional ballad (extract)
The Young Tamlane appeared in the first edition of Scott's Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, where it appears in the second volume.
These are the first three verses of the ballad, which is much longer. The poem begins with the warning that Tam collects either a possession or the virginity of any maiden who passes through the forest of Carterhaugh.
