Mozart in India

Nicola Benedetti plays the first movement of Mozart's Violin Concerto No 5 at Siri Fort in Delhi

Nicola Benedetti plays the first movement of Mozart's Violin Concerto No 5 at Siri Fort in Delhi. The concert was filmed by Indian state TV broadcaster, Doordarshan. It was a big undertaking for the public service station, but the Indian crew rose to occasion.

β€œWestern classical music is rarely played in India,” says the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ SSO’s Andrew Trinick. β€œAs the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ SSO is a broadcasting orchestra, it was obvious that Doordarshan should agree to film the concert.

"Normally in the UK the camera director studies the score and plots camera shots accordingly, however, the Doordarshan Filming was agreed very late in the day. Also the TV crew could not read music, or know what the various instruments were, so it was done on the fly with advice from the Orchestra.

"The TV team were wonderful, worked hard, doing their best to get good shots and to cover the event as best they could. They were very open to suggestion and wanted help with direction, the music and which instruments to focus on. The result is one of which I am sure they are proud.”
