Jazz instruments and composition

Jazz trumpet player and composer, Byron Wallen, discusses his approaches to composition. He explains that his composing is based on feeling – not principally an intellectual activity. He talks about blending different instrumental timbres to create the effect he is striving for. He experiments using a muted trumpet to harmonise with a dark textural part for the flute before deciding to use the more 'haunting' sound of the flugelhorn. The narrative is supported with demonstrations by the composer himself and footage of his jazz ensemble playing excerpts from the piece.
