Formation of an oxide
In this cartoon oxygen and iron atoms combine to form a new substance - iron oxide.
Oxygen particles in the air around the hot iron wool are whizzing about looking for particles to join with. When the oxygen particles come into contact with the hot iron particles they readily combine with them to form iron oxide.
