School in the 1930s
A look at what school would have been like in the 1930s. Gran is asked if she ever took anything to school without asking. She recalls the day her brother took his pet rat, 'White Fang' to school. We are transported back in time with Gran's memory of the day. Children walked to school and not many people owned cars. Children sat in rows at wooden desks and the class teacher wrote on a blackboard using chalk. Children left school at 14 to go to work. There was no school uniform and children wore hand-knitted sweaters. At break time, children played skipping and games with wooden hoops.
