Kent Farmers calling for seasonal workers scheme not to be scrapped

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

Fruit farmers in Kent will lobby the Environment Secretary today, over the scrapping of a scheme which they say puts the future of their industry in doubt.

Caroline Spelman will meet the chairman of the Kent branch of the National Farmers Union at the County Show in Detling, where she will be told a scheme which allows farmers to bring in labour from Eastern Europe at harvest time must be saved.

It is due to be scrapped next year, but growers say Kent's fruit industry will face a serious labour crisis if that happens (06:07, 07:07 and 08:08).

We say it every day on this programme - there are delays on the M25 this morning from Junction 5 to the Clacket Lane services. However, if you are sitting in queues there this morning, we have got some good news for you. The Highways Agency is going to convert the hard shoulder between junctions 5 and 7 into a permanent extra lane (07:48 and 08:22).

Lots in the papers today about security at the Olympics - 3,500 extra troops are being brought in after the security firm G4S said it was unable to provide enough guards. The Daily Mail claims 'A' level students have been hired to search spectators and bags.

Meanwhile we have been contacted by a teenager from Medway who claims she has been given security clearance to the Olympic village and has been signed up to serve food to athletes - even though she never agreed to take on the job (06:22, 07:22 and 08:48).
