Thanet fishermen call for action over Dutch electric nets
John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.
Thanet trawlermen have described fishing in the Channel "like fishing in a graveyard" after their Dutch counterparts moved into the area with electric nets.
It is legal but local fishermen are demanding an end to the practice, saying they have never caught so many dead fish.
The nets are intended to shock the fish rather than kill them outright and Dutch politicians argue that research shows the process is actually more environmentally friendly.
Thanet Fisheries Association Secretary, Tom Brown, and Broadstairs fishmonger Jason Llewellyn share their concerns (07.07). Nigel Farage, UKIP MEP for the South East, tells John and Clare he wants the electric nets banned (08.07).
London 2012 is one month away and a new survey reveals that two-thirds of over-16s in Kent are not playing sport.
Sport England figures show only a small increase in those playing sport once a week in the county, compared to six months ago.
It's the same rate-of-increase nationally, but Sport England claims levels across the country are at an all-time high, with half-a-million more people taking part.
John Copsey from the Racqueteers Club explains that demand for Badminton in Canterbury is perfectly adequate but the availability of facilities is holding people back. Sport England's Director of Sport, Phil Smith, offers a number of solutions to get Kent more active (07.22).
And do people in Thanet want to work? Last week a recruitment consultant told John and Clare that there were plenty of jobs in East Kent but that residents did not want them.
Our reporter went along to a jobs fair in Margate where 80 companies offered people 450 jobs (06.53). John and Clare speak to unemployed Gordon Farmer who attended the fair (08.40).
