Thanet needs clear vision says College principal

A college principal says he risks "gambling" with students' futures - unless decision-makers come up with a clear economic plan for the future of East Kent.

Graham Razey, of Thanet College, says politicians must put differences aside - and decide whether tourism, Manston Airport, the Discovery Park at Sandwich or the green agenda offers the best opportunity for the region.

He had told a special radio debate - to be broadcast on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent tonight - that he cannot plan the right courses for his students, unless there is a clear focus (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

This morning, we are looking at the future of East Kent, and just down the road from here is the Turner Contemporary - which attracted around half-a-million visitors in its first year.

And recent research commissioned by the art gallery suggests the place has contributed nearly Β£14m to the local economy.

Thanet District Council has identified tourism and "building on the area's heritage and history as a seaside resort" - as a key aim in its soon-to-be published 'economic strategy'.

But how much of a future does the area's tourism industry have? (07:22).

We have been talking about the future of East Kent - is it possible that in Margate's case, the future lies in its history? Dreamland is one of the town's most famous attractions, but like many places it has fallen on hard times in recent years.

Now there is a plan to revive it as a historic amusement park. Susan Marsh MBE is secretary of the Dreamland Trust - she lives in Manchester but is a passionate supporter of Margate.

Margate Civic Society is a charity which works to celebrate and protect the town's architecture. They give Town Pride Awards for new and refurbished buildings which improve the landscape (08:53).
