Dover MP Charlie Elphicke unhappy with Eurotunnel deal
John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.
Dover MP Charlie Elphicke is calling for Eurotunnel to be referred to the Competition Commission over its plans to run former Seafance ferries across the channel.
The French owned ferry company went bust earlier this year with the loss of 1,000 jobs.
Eurotunnel has paid over Β£50m for the ships and assets and will lease them to a workers cooperative made up of former staff. Over 500 jobs it is claimed could be saved in Dover and Calais.
Mr Elphicke shares his concerns with John and Clare at the same time as John Keefe from Eurotunnel explains the logic behind the purchase (07.07).
Simon Calder, Travel Editor for the Independent offers his expert opinion on the deal and what it could mean for the industry in Kent (08.08).
Also on the programme, Laura Warner, a grandmother from Gillingham, looks after her two grandchildren aged three and six after her daughter fell victim to substance misuse.
Now she is calling on the Government to give kinship carers the same level of support as foster parents.
In Kent, foster parents are paid a maximum of Β£406 a week, compared to Β£80 a week for kinship carers.
We hear her story at 07.22.
John and Clare also speak to Sarah Wellard from family campaign group Grandparents Plus, and Shadow Childrens' Minister Lisa Nandy (08.23).
