Action demanded over residential lorry parking

Truck drivers are leaving their engines running outside houses, dumping litter and even relieving themselves in the street. That is what residents say is happening in Kent because the county has a lack of official parking areas for lorries.

A survey has found that Swale is the biggest unofficial parking hotspot in the South East, where 85 lorries were parked up at just one spot.

Now Kent County Council says something must be done, and has vowed to find new sites.

David Brazier, Deputy Cabinet Member for Highway at Kent County Council, and Don Armour from the Freight Transport Association share their opinions on the issue (07.07).

Dartford Borough Councillor Matt Bryant talks about how his residents are having problems on the doorstep of the M25, and Kelvin Hopkins, Luton North MP, suggests potential solutions for the county's freight services (08.07).

Also on the programme, the Sheppey MP, Gordon Henderson, says there are still unanswered questions, after the Thamesteel plant in Sheerness was sold out of administration.

The steelworks will now be run by a new firm set up by its previous Saudi-based owners.

350 people lost their jobs earlier this year - but it is not clear how many posts will be re-advertised.

Business expert Justin Urquhart Stewart talks John and Clare through the procedures that a company goes through when buying a business back after calling in the administrators (07.22).

And opposition councillors in Dartford and a retailer described the Β£79,000 received from the government backed Portas Pilots scheme aimed at revitalising the town's high street as 'small fare' and 'a drop in the ocean'.

Conservative Council Leader Jeremy Kite, who led the successful bid, and Alan Beckham, Manager of Mitchell Carpets in the town, offer their contrasting views on the subject (07.25).
