The Conservatives' Boris Johnson, Labour's Ken Livingstone and Brian Paddick for the Lib Dems all want to bring some suburban rail services under the control of Transport for London.
Local communities feel helpless and unable to stop wind farms damaging valued landscapes and intruding into some of the most tranquil areas of the countryside, according to the Campaign to Protect Rural England. The organisation says big, well-funded developers seem able to ride roughshod over legitimate public concerns; it is calling on the government to redress the balance.
It has only been open four months but organisers of Kent's first food bank say it has already fed over 200 people, including 100 children. Christian charity the Trussell Trust says there has been a big rise in demand for food banks, and it is planning to open new ones in Ashford and Gravesend.
Those running the only food bank in the county so far, in Medway, say families are turning up hungry and that parents are going without food in order that their youngsters can eat.
