Christopher Tappin: talks about his i Texas

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

Christopher Tappin, the retired businessman from Orpington who has been extradited to the United States on arms dealing charges, has been speaking to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ about his treatment. 65 year old Mr Tappin has now been released on bail after his family paid 50 thousand dollars. But he will have to remain in Texas while he awaits trial (06:07, 07:07 and 08:17).

Nearly a third of children in some parts of Kent have had fillings or extractions by the time they start primary school - some at the age of just two.

Check-ups in schools used to help in the fight against tooth decay, but a legal ruling five years ago has meant that screening has been considerably scaled back.

Since 2007 parents have had to give consent for a dentist to examine their child in school, and rates have plummeted by 70% (06:12, 07:22 and 08:07).

Now it may seem perverse but one of the more interesting councils in next week's local elections is Tunbridge Wells. Traditionally seen as an unshakeably Conservative borough it could be a very accurate litmus test of the Coalition Government's current standing, as well as a reflection on controversial local issues, such as town centre regeneration and traffic management.

18 of the 48 seats on the council are up for grabs. 15 of them Conservative and 3 of them formerly held by the Liberal Democrats. But it is by no means a two horse election in Tunbridge Wells. Labour and UKIP are both mounting strong challenges.

Well to to get an idea of how the campaign is shaping up, this morning we are joined by representatives of all four parties, Bob Atwood is the leader of the Conservative group, Councillor David Neve is from the Liberal Democrats, Councillor Victor Webb is from UKIP and and the chairman of Tunbridge Wells Labour party is Nick Maltby (07:39).
