Kent victims of asbestos do not have to pay towards legal costs

Sufferers of asbestos related cancer are to be exempt from government reforms to no-win no-fee legal claims, after a climbdown by ministers.

More than 400 people in Kent have died of mesothelioma in the last five years. Under the proposed changes, victims could have lost up to 25% of any compensation in legal fees, prompting one Kent MP to threaten to vote against her own Government (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

A grant of Β£5m the Regional Growth Fund, was announced late last year. And at a meeting at County Hall tonight, Network Rail is expected to give more details of how that money and more besides will be used - totalling Β£11.8m (06:25 and 07:22).

Trees are being felled in Paddock Wood to prevent the spread of the beetle known as the "Asian Longhorn" which is not native to this country.

It is confirmed to have infested more than 20 trees in the area, all of which are having to be chopped down.
