Kent rail ticket office closure concerns

There are renewed concerns in Kent over the proposed closure of 37 rail ticket offices and the impact on commuter safety.

It comes after Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent saw a Department of Transport email suggesting a decision into ticket office closures has already been taken elsewhere in the country - despite a nationwide public consultation into ticketing not finishing until the end of June.

37 ticket offices at smaller stations face closure in Kent as part of planned efficiency savings (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

Kent Police has announced plans to recruit more than 40 new officers in the autumn - even though 500 posts are being axed because of budget cuts.

It has been estimated that new Government restrictions on police pay will release an extra Β£1.5m a year, and this could pay for 44 new officers.

The force has been accused by the Kent Police Federation of spinning a "good news story" out of officers losing money.

But Kent Police says that with a recruitment freeze now over, it needs the right make-up of officers while savings are made (06:24, 07:22 and 08:22).

Just eight months ago we reported how Medway was named as the second worst area in the country for patients acquiring bedsores.

But now staff at the Medway Maritime Hospital have won a national award for their work in dealing with and preventing the condition (06:41, 07:39 and 08:39).

50-weeks of roadworks start in Maidstone town centre today - with businesses fearing a loss of trade.

Southern Gas Networks move into the Stone Street area - and the work will see the temporary closure of Knightrider Street (06:54 and 07:48).
