Canterbury man facing extradition to Portugal

A Kent man says his world has been "turned upside down" after the Portugese authorities requested his extradition for a crime he was cleared of 17 years ago.

Graham Mitchell, a 49-year-old photographer from Canterbury, is wanted for attempting to murder a German tourist in the Algarve.

Andre Jorling fell over a 12' wall and was left paralysed from the waist down. Graham Mitchell and his friend, Warren Tozer, spent a year in a Portugese prison before being aquitted of attempted murder in 1995. But earlier this month Kent Police turned up at Mr Mitchell's home with a European Arrest Warrant. He is now on bail pending his extradition.

A shopkeeper in Ashford says he is considering selling up, after his post office and convenience store was attacked with sledgehammers and thousands of pounds of cigarettes stolen.

Across the country robberies on local shops are up 102% and burglaries are up 40% in just a year. Police in north Kent have reported a string of 15 burglaries, with tobacco products worth nearly Β£30,000 taken.

It provides 60% of all employment in Folkestone, Hythe and the Romney Marsh and is more important that Pfizer was to Sandwich. That is what Shepway Council says about Dungeness nuclear power station. But the exisiting power station is being wound down with electricity production due to cease by 2015.

Now councillors in Ashford have backed its campaign to build a new nuclear power station there, Dungeness C, saying it is vital for local jobs. Ministers say it's possible, but only if environmental issues can be overcome.
