Unusual birth defect for Five Northfleet babies

A Kent MP has written to the Department of Health asking for an investigation, after it emerged five babies in the same street had suffered the same rare birth defect.

The Gravesham MP, Adam Holloway, made his request after hearing the children had gastroschisis. It means part of the bowel protrudes through the stomach wall (06:07, 7:07 and 08:07).

There has been a call in the House of Lords to introduce steps to prevent trafficked children getting into the UK, via Eurostar.

The Liberal Democrat peer, Baroness Doocey says children as young as 12 are travelling by train on their own, from France and Belgium (06:22).

A new Dover to Calais ferry service starts this morning, following the collapse of SeaFrance in November last year.

The Norman Spirit which will be run by DFDS and LD Lines will operate under the French flag employing 150 workers from the other side of the Channel.

However, with unemployment figures hitting a new high yesterday, it has emerged only a few jobs have been given to British workers (07.53 and 08:53).
