Pfizer's Sandwich announcement: one year on

Nearly one year on from the news that pharmaceutical giant Pfizer was pulling out of Sandwich, the company says around two thirds of the 1,000 workers made redundant have found employment.

Nearly one year on from the announcement that pharmaceutical giant Pfizer was pulling out of its Sandwich base, the company says around two thirds of the 1,000 workers made redundant by the closure have found employment elsewhere.

The news comes after Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Kent exclusively revealed the firm was in talks over selling the site to a consortium led by property developer London and Metropolitan.

John and Clare review the developments that have taken place on both a personal and professional level in Sandwich.

We also hear from Dr. Annette Doherty, Pfizer's site leader in Sandwich and business and corporate finance expert Justin Urquart Stewart, who analyses the feasibility of regenerating the area.

Also on the programme, there are concerns gas works in Maidstone will last almost 12 months, severely impacting on the lives of local traders and businesses.

Around 50 weeks of traffic disruption is set to befall a town already plagued by 34 weeks of town centre improvement works.

We speak to Chloe Boyce, a spokeswoman for Southern Gas, the company carrying out the maintenance work.

Bill Moss, Maidstone Town Centre Manager, and trader David Pickett tell John and Clare how it will affect them.

And the number of students from Kent and Medway applying to go to university is down 10% this year, the first that universities will charge higher tuition fees.

Applications to Kent's two universities, the University of Kent and Christchurch University in Canterbury, have both seen a drop in applications but slightly below the national average.

Tom Ritchie, President of Kent Students' Union, and Juliet Chester from Universities UK assess the figures, and Steven Holdcroft, Head of Recruitment at the University of Kent, shares his views on UCAS' announcement.
