Kent residents at fearing for flood insurance

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

If you live in parts of Kent that are at risk of flooding, you could find it harder to obtain insurance in the future.

Residents in some of Kent's flooding hotspots like Yalding and East Peckham fear they may not be able to insure their properties because the government agreement intended to protect homes in flood hit areas from expensive premiums end next summer.

We hear from Sue Chalkley from the National Flood Forum and Matt Cullen from the Association of British Insurers (07.07) and Mark Douch of the Environment Agency (08.07).

Also on the programme, how could a convicted child rapist from Lithuania come to commit another rape in Kent? That question is being asked by a high court judge about Victor Akulic.

He was convicted and jailed for the offence, which took place while he was living in Sheeness. During an appeal against his sentence this week, Lady Justice Hallett questioned why criminals with such serious convictions are allowed to "walk into the country."

We speak to Julian Bild, a solicitor who has been working in immigration for 15 years (07.22. Mark Reckless, MP for Rochester, and Alp Memhet, Vice-Chair of the pressure group Migration Watch UK (08.22), also examine the case.

And we're talking about youth unemployment with Mike Hill from Kent County Council and Neville Gaunt, chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses (07.40).

We also hear the story of Richard Webb from Tunbridge Wells who spent eighteen months looking for work before landing a position at Voluntary Action Within Kent, an organisation that helps Kent youngesters find internships (08.46).
