There is fresh controversy over the abolition of Kent Police Authority to make way for a new elected police commissioner. The debate is over when the election will happen and how much it will cost.

The Kent Police Authority is a group that holds police chiefs in the county to account, but the government is planning to abolish the authority and make the system more accountable by introducing a directly elected police commissioner. It was suggested the election could take place at the same time at the local elections but it could be bought forward at a cost of Β£2m.

Three Kent MPs are threatening to defy their leadership and vote in favour of a referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union tonight. The rebels want the public to have their say on the issue, despite all three party leaders ordering their MPs to vote against it.
