Ex-MI5 head: Concern over terror legislation

Eliza Manningham-Buller, former director-general of MI5, argues that "rushing to legislate" in the wake of a terrorist attrocity is often "a well-intentioned mistake".

Speaking in her third Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Reith Lecture, she cites the example of the proposal to detain terrorists without charge for 42 days, which she opposed, arguing that "we compound the problem of terrorism if we use it as a reason to erode the freedom of all".

Her third Reith Lecture, Freedom will be broadcast on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4 on Tuesday 20 September 2011 at 09:00 BST and repeated on Saturday 24 September at 22:15 BST.
