Kent patients waste Β£16m in unused prescription drugs

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

Three thousand hip replacements, 2,000 heart operations or more than 400 community nurses in Kent, that is what Β£16m could buy you in the NHS. That is also how much health managers in Kent say it is costing them every year for wasted prescription medicines.

To tackle the wastage, many GPs are limiting prescriptions to 28 days, a move which the health watchdog the Patient Association wants stopped. It says conscientious patients are being penalised, and it is more work for GPs and pharmacists.

The new Pembury Hospital opened to great fanfare last week. It cost Β£235m and provides state of the art, ensuite facilities for patients, if they an get there that is.
