Another harsh winter for Kent commuters

Matt Davison sits in alongside Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather for Kent.

Kent's rail commuters could be facing another winter of disruption caused by snow and ice after plans to change the way our trains are powered were deemed "premature" by the government.

A group of MPs which investigated the problems last winter had hoped ministers would commit to replacing the electric third rail system across the South East. It was that system that failed so badly in the freezing weather causing trains to get stranded miles from their destinations. But the Department for Transport says it is too early to commit to the expense of replacing the system with the alternative of overhead power lines (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07.)

A TV actor who grew up in Kent says it would be a big mistake to close the county's youth clubs.

Neil Stuke who is in the legal drama, Silk is worried that the Linwood Youth Centre in Deal, where he went as a child, might have to close, under changes to youth services being proposed by Kent County Council (06:22, 07:22 and 08:22.)

Canterbury could be getting a statue of Chaucer, the man who wrote The Canterbury Tales about 650 years ago.

The city's Commemoration Society is planning to pay for it and the local council is expected to give early approval this week (6:41.)
