Talking to yourself
Richard Hoggart muses over how we communicate using the written word in his second lecture entitled 'Talking to yourself'.
The British academic and Assistant Director General of UNESCO Richard Hoggart explores the concepts of communication in his Reith lecture series entitled 'Only connect'.
In this lecture, entitled 'Talking to yourself', Richard Hoggart analyses how and why people write and talk. He explores the mentality behind writing and explains that through the written word we speak to ourselves and others. He considers all writers as 'Intelligent Laymen', and asks whether we write to be admired by others or to learn a truth about ourselves.
