Reaction to Bobby Sands' death in the USA
Martin Bell reports from Washington on the reaction in America to the death of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands MP, beginning with footage of a republican protest outside the British diplomatic mission in New York. He reports that similar protests took place in San Francisco and Chicago and that there will be a 24-hour boycott of British ships in east coast ports.
Senator Edward Kennedy gives what Bell describes as a muted response while New York Congressman Mario Biaggi says he hopes the British government suffers from the negative world reaction to Sands’ death. The White House issued a statement of concern and regret.
