Silver lining

Bill Oddie spots a water rail from a birdwatcher's hide. Now that is a sight which you don’t see very often at all; usually water rails are seen in winter and even then it’s just a quick glimpse. The water rail has a chick with it - Bill's never seen one before. The chick is gorgeous, with downy feathers resembling black velvet. It’s like a mole on stilts. It's usually incredibly hard to see these things are because they breed right in the depths of the marsh. Bill's never known any warden even on a nature reserve to find a water rail’s nest and they very rarely see the chicks so this is something special. And now the kingfisher’s back on his perch. What more could you ask? We had the rain, then came the rainbow; we had the clouds, now here is the silver lining.
