Squeezed in
This little nest is a tit's nest but it's not a blue tit or a great tit. There are 11 babies squeezed in this nest box, looking really sleepy, but they'll soon wake up when the parents come in. The clue to identifying this species is the little white spot on the back of their black heads. Their name refers to their black heads, and although you may not see them, the chances are if you have a bird feeder or fir trees in your garden they'll be common visitors, but they are very quick and never hang around on the feeders. Although it seems a big family, coal tits usually have 8 or 9 chicks, and 11 is not uncommon.
