Fabulous seas

Britain’s seas easily rival the wealth of wildlife on land.

Natural England’s recent survey into British attitudes to the sea, threw up three repeated words: cold, dirty and dangerous. Well it might be a little bit chilly, but dirty? Definitely not! We have one of the cleanest seas in the whole of Europe and it's no more dangerous than anywhere on land, it's just a little less familiar. While many of us think of the sea as just a big bucket of salty water, the reality is that it's one of the greatest wildlife habitats that we have. On land our mammals come in all shapes, sizes and colours, from large stags to cute fox cubs. In the sea we get dolphins and baby seals. There's an embarrassment of riches in the form of kelp forests and cold water corals, fish, seahorses, sharks and even seabirds like the puffin. So we might think the seas is cold, dirty and dangerous, but to many animals the sea is simply home. And yet only a fraction of it is protected. If we don't do something about that we stand to lose one of the greatest wildlife habitats we have.
