Super chimp brains

Over the past few decades researchers around the world have been working closely with chimpanzees. They have designed tests to explore just how intelligent the chimps really are. Chimps have shown us they can count, they can use a joystick to complete a maze, they have better short term memory than humans, and they might be able to communicate with symbolic language. But for this kind of research to work, the chimps have to start very young. They work closely with the researchers for many years, and this intense research has produced results which shows the potential of the chimps' minds. But most chimps don't live like this in the wild: it's like comparing the average human to a chess master or an olympic athlete.
