Status negotiations
In the wild, group cohesion is vital for chimpanzees - everyone needs to know who's in charge. They must co-operate to deter predators or defend their territory, and working together also makes them formidable hunters. As the frenzy of the hunt dies down, the chimps reinforce their positions in the group by sharing out the meat. Every chimp understands their own status and the status of those around them.
