Seed gliders
The football sized pod of the alsomitra is packed full with hundreds of extraordinary seeds. Each is an almost aerodynamically perfect glider that can be supported by the lightest of wings, allowing it to be carried hundreds of metres away.
Once it hits the ground, the wings rot away and the seed starts to germinate. A new alsomitra vine starts to grow up the canopy into the light, well away from its parent.
