This Madagascan inhabitant has a fearsome reputation as a result of its peculiar and unkempt look. The aye-aye fulfils the niche that a woodpecker would, tapping on branches to find hollow bits where grubs might be hidden - percussive foraging. It then uses its elongated middle finger as a tool to retrieve the grubs from inside small openings.
