Wild at heart
Africa and Mac are two of the island's youngest inhabitants. Rescued from the pet and bush meat trades, these orphaned chimpanzees have spent a year being rehabilitated by the team. They haven't seen a forest or an adult chimp since they were a few months old. Today is an important day for the youngsters as they take their first step on the road to being returned to the wild. Mark is allowed into their enclosure before they're taken off to their new home. It is always risky when the youngsters meet adults for the first time, they have to be accepted into the adult group, but it's a risk they must take if they are ever to survive in the wild. In a rare moment of immediate success though, one of the adults rushes over and scoops up a newcomer then cuddles and grooms it. It doesn't get much better than this.
